The most sophisticated line of Canon camcorders are the Professional 3 CCD camcorders, which produce videos that are as crystal clear as commercial DVDs. These high-end camcorders use progressive scan image sensors with horizontal pixel shift.

Optura and Elura camcorders may not use progressive scan technology, but the vast majority of consumers are still amazed at the clarity and vividness of the videos they can make with these camcorders. Optura camcorders are known for their sophistication, and the Elura line is designed to be especially user-friendly. All Optura and Elura camcorders can also be used to take high-resolution still photographs. Stereo electric condenser microphones capture 16-bit digital sound to record conversation and background music.

While the Canon ZR digital camcorders are the least expensive, many ZR specifications are equitable or at least comparable to the Professional 3 CCD, Optura, and Elura models. Like other Canon models, ZR camcorders have a night mode, have auto-focus with manual override, and record onto miniDV video cassettes.
